                                                                        CITY OF WAUSEON, OHIO




The Wauseon Civil Service Commission will administer a written examination for the position of “Firefighter – Paramedic and EMT” for the Fire Department of the City of Wauseon, Ohio.  Candidates will take the Civil Service Exam on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at Wauseon Municipal Building in the Fire Department Training room, second floor, at 230 Clinton Street, Wauseon, Ohio.


JOB DESCRIPTION: This job requires the employee to work under the direction of the Fire Chief of the City of Wauseon; respond to fire alarms; assist with controlling and extinguishing fires; operate numerous pieces of equipment. Operate hand tools; respond to life-threatening situations and provide emergency medical treatment, as necessary; and all other functions necessary to help maintain the safety of the public as required by the Fire Chief. 


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED and be a certified Firefighter / Paramedic or EMT in the State of Ohio.  Candidates must provide proof that they have met the education requirements and certification requirements at the time of application.  A valid driver’s license is required.


ADDITION OF CREDITS:  In order to be considered for a Uniformed Service credit of 10%, the applicant must be a resident of the State of Ohio and submit a copy of their certificate of service or honorable discharge from active duty. Applicants who have relevant firefighter training may also file with the Commission to receive a 10% credit.  Applicants wishing to obtain military or fire service credits must supply copies of DD214 and/or fire certification upon submitting their application.  Additional credit for uninterrupted seniority with the Wauseon Fire will be added to the exam scores. 


Successful candidates are required to serve a one (1) year probationary period. Potential candidates will be required to take a medical examination by a licensed physician and undergo physical ability testing, drug testing and submit to an extensive background check. Potential candidates must be 21 years of age by the date of the test and be a citizen of the United States of America, or have legally declared their intentions of becoming a United States citizen.  Annual salary for the entry level position of firefighter/paramedic starts at $42,653.00 plus benefits, and Firefighter/EMT starts at $37,806.00. Employees in this classified position are “7(k) eligible” as described in 29 USC § 207(k) and subject to a 212 hour platoon schedule every 28 days. 


Application forms are available at the Wauseon Fire Department, 230 Clinton Street, Wauseon, Ohio.  Applications may be obtained during the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each candidate must pay a $20.00 (non-refundable) application-filing fee at the time they submit their application.  Applications must be returned to the Wauseon Fire Department by February 15, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.
