The City of Wauseon is seeking an energetic, bright, and motivated individual with a history of high performance to provide high-level support of the administrative staff of the Fire Department in this new positon of Executive Assistant to the Fire Chief.  This is a high-impact, high-visibility, mission-driven positon within the City that will help the Fire Department strive to always be ready when the people really need us.  This is a public safety position based in trust, credibility, and competency focused on serving a management team seeking continuous improvement of the fire, rescue, and emergency medical services we provide to the stakeholders in our community.

This exciting role requires superior attention to detail, solid organizational skills, and a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information. The Executive Assistant must be professional, efficient, and interested in working in a fast-paced small city fire department. Critical with this position is the ability to be flexible and change directions at a moment’s notice and respond to urgent situations in order to function as a seamless extension of the Fire Department leadership. 

An Executive Assistant of the Wauseon Fire Department functions under direction of the Fire Chief, coordinating the day-to-day administrative operations of the Department. This person will also oversee the Wellness and Fitness and Program for the Fire Department employees, with specific responsibilities in this area to include: workers’ compensation administration, strategic planning and evaluation, design of programs to promote safety, wellness and fitness, risk management and cost saving methods to reduce the impact of employee benefit expenses.

  • Independently has ability to interpret and implement established guidelines while meeting and resolving the complex issues facing an all-hazards response fire department;
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly;
  • Ability to meet such specific experience, physical, and other requirements as may be established by competent authority;
  • Ability to enter data or information into a terminal PC or other key board device such as an MDT;
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and through written documents with clear, accurate and organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar;

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Fire Administration, Health Science Administration, another related field of public administration, finance, or a related field supplemented by one (1) year of administrative experience, or an  equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Strategic Focus and Direction

This is a new and significant position for the City of Wauseon that will focus on the health, safety, and security of our firefighter and EMS personnel and the many dimensions of the fire service that this entails. This position provides a dynamic opportunity to anticipate obstacles and appropriately identify solutions in a continuous iterative process aimed at keeping our organization appropriately matched to our external environment, enabling the Fire Department to better act in a systematic and critical manner.  The Executive Assistant will serve as the continuative link for the current and future administrative staff, in a position classification that will continually develop and expand.


The annual salary for this position will be a minimum of $43,450.00 depending on qualifications; commensurate with experience and education.  Evaluation-based merit salary increase and excellent benefits including medical, vacation, and public employee pension.
